Primary Causes of Carpet Wrinkles

Carpet wrinkles, also known as buckling or rippling, are typically caused by a loss of tension between the carpet and the walls. This can happen for several reasons, ranging from how it was first put down to the environment in your home.

Improper Installation:

This is the most common cause. If an installer used only a "knee kicker" instead of a power stretcher, the carpet may not be tight enough. Over time, normal foot traffic pulls the slack forward, forming waves.

Humidity and Temperature:

Carpets are sensitive to moisture. High humidity causes the carpet fibers and backing to absorb moisture and expand. When the air dries, the carpet may not shrink back perfectly, leaving permanent ripples.

Dragging Heavy Furniture

Sliding a heavy sofa or table across the floor can tug the carpet out of its tack strips, stretching the material and creating a permanent slack.

Wrong or Worn Padding:

If the padding is too thick or too soft, it allows the carpet to flex too much when you walk on it. This constant movement eventually stretches the backing.

Delamination

This occurs when the primary backing (where the fibers are) separates from the secondary backing. This is often due to age, manufacturing defects, or improper steam cleaning that left the carpet too wet.

Carpet Repair or patching

Carpet patching is often worth it for minor, localized damage as it is significantly cheaper and faster than a full replacement. However, the decision depends on the size of the damage, the age of your carpet, and your long-term goals.

When is repair NOT the best option?

If your carpet is over 15 years old, has widespread mold/water damage, or the padding underneath has completely deteriorated, replacement may be necessary. For localized issues, however, repair is almost always the more practical choice.
